Cocoon vs Layla In Depth Comparison
From our experts
Construction
Cocoon Mattresses9.4
Cocoon is an all-foam mattress (classic and chill). These construction details cover both versions since the sole difference is their covers. However, the mattresses come in two firmness options: medium-soft and extra firm.
There’s a slight difference in the construction of the medium-soft and that of the extra firm. While the medium-soft has a transition layer, the extra-firm version does not. Thus, the medium soft is in 3 layers and the firm feel in 2 layers. Their bases are also different, but that will be covered in the details.
Construction Details
Premium-grade Fabric Cover (Classic)
The cover here is made from 100% polyester. This gives it a soft feel and it’s quite breathable for the smooth passage of air if you love to sleep cool. This cover is durable and is a stretch-knit fabric cover.
Phase Change Cover (Chill)
The Chill mattress took a notch upwards for extra coolness with the infusion of a phase change material in its stretch-knit cover. This technology regulates the ambient temperature to keep you cool just when you need it. It’s also cool to the touch and stays fresh for you.
Comfort Layer
Both versions used premium memory foam in their comfort layers. The memory foam used is 2 inches tall. While you get immersed into both mattresses, this memory foam engulfs your whole body, adapts to its shape and size to give you a comfortable sleep all night.
Transition Layer
This layer is present only in the medium-soft option. It’s 2 inches of polyfoam that serves to convey the sleeper from the soft memory foam layer upwards down to the thick support base beneath. This transition allows the mattress to contour the body properly for pressure relief.
Support Core
The Baselayer or core of both mattresses is designed to be sturdy. This is to ensure it serves its purpose of durability and structural stability.
For the extra firm feel option, the base layer is 8 inches of high-density polyfoam which keeps the mattress in shape, and since it’s just beneath the memory foam, it creates the required firmness to support heavyweight sleepers.
The medium-soft option, however, sacrificed 2 inches of its base layer to form a transition layer just above it, making the support base 6 inches of high-density polyfoam. The transition layer limits direct interaction between the comfort layer and the sturdy base keeping things super soft.
Layla Mattresses9.3
Layla Mattress
This 10″ mattress is built in four unique layers with each layer offering its own benefit to the sleeper. The use of copper is also a catch here.
The details
Polyester Cover
The cover of this mattress is a product of polyester blend that offers a soft-plush feeling. In addition to this comfort, thermogel was infused into this cover to make it cooler and retain this coolness.
Comfort Layer (Soft)
The first layer after the cover begins with the soft side. It’s a 3″ copper memory foam. This layer is sheer soft so it allows you to sink in and contour you afterward.
With copper infused into this layer of memory foam, it creates an extra cooling effect and owing to the antimicrobial properties of copper, you are free of bacteria while you enjoy your sleep. The copper also provides variable support in points where you have deep compression.
Transition Layer
This transition layer is made of a 2″ HD foam. This layer is responsible for the interaction between the soft layer and the firm layer of the mattress.
Support Base
At the base of this mattress is the support 4.5″ foam. It is much firmer and it’s a HD polyfoam. Usually, the mattress layers end here at the base but we still have the firm side since it’s a 2-in-1 flippable mattress.
Comfort Layer (Firm)
On the flip side of this mattress is the firm layer which is 1″ in height and is also a copper-infused memory foam but a lot thinner and firm.
N/B: Both firm and soft options come with motion isolation implying that the movement of your partner on the bed while you are fast asleep does not affect you in any way.
Layla Hybrid
The Layla Hybrid features same construction. Two firmness options, all you have to do is flip to get your desired firmness.
This mattress is made up of 5 layers with the pocketed coils making the real difference and the zipper cover of course.
The details
Feature Rich Cover
The cover of this hybrid mattress is rich in features. From being removable with a zipper to being made from a combination of polyester, lycra and viscose, it’s one feature-packed irregular cover. All these contribute to making it super cool. It’s highly breathable, soft and assures the sleeper of cool sleep.
Comfort Layer (Soft)
As usual, the soft side in a flippable mattress is the first layer. This soft side is a 2.5″ copper-infused memory foam just like it’s other all-foam counterpart.
The copper in the mix caters for bacteria protection with it’s anti-microbial properties. It makes the mattress extra-cool by zapping heat away.
It also contours the body in a slow responsive style and adds to ease pressure from relevant points where it’s needed.
Transition Layer
Underneath this soft layer is the transition layer which is a zoned 2″ polyfoam that serves as the bridge between the soft side and the firm side. This transition layer is firm which is needed for the transition role it plays.
Support Layer
This support layer makes all the difference and the major reason why this mattress is termed hybrid.
Stealing a sizable portion of the entire mattress, it’s 6″ high in pocketed coils covered in foam.
All the bouncy and floating feeling is supplied from this layer. The coils add extra comfort and coolness equally.
Base Support
This layer is usually the last but for the flippable nature of this mattress, it finds itself in this position. It’s a 1.5″ zoned polyfoam and the thinner version of the zoned polyfoam above it.
Comfort Layer (Firm)
The flip side layer is the firm one which is a 1.5″ copper-infused memory foam. It sits at the bottom so you could just flip it over and get down to the firm side of things. It is thinner than the soft side which is normal.
Durability
Cocoon Mattresses9.6
The sturdy support cores/bases of both mattresses create not just a foundation and shape for the mattresses, but makes them resilient and sheer durable. With two years invested in research, hardly will Sealy come up with a product that won’t stand the test of time. That will be a slap on its integrity and years of experience in the industry.
Layla Mattresses9.7
Both mattresses from Layla are durable with resilient support bases which is why the Layla Mattresses come with a lifetime warranty.
Cooling and Comfort
Cocoon Mattresses9.5
The cooling technology embedded in the phase change layer of the Chill mattress ensures you sleep cool at all times while enjoying the comfort of a mild cool to the touch surface.

The memory foam present in their comfort layers is soft and engulfs the body in sublime contouring comfort.
Layla Mattresses9.2
Layla Mattress
The polyester cover on this mattress coupled with thermogel creates the coolness you need to never sleep hot again.
The comfort layer just like it’s tag, is there to assure you of maximum comfort in body contouring, pressure relief, softness and coolness. Thanks to copper in the mix, you won’t be wary of bacteria and you can stay healthy while using it.
Layla Hybrid Mattress
Same comfort and coolness is provided by this hybrid version. From it’s premium quality cover to the first comfort layer, every sleeper is entitled to the best contouring comfort, best cool sleep and bacteria-free usage.
Back Pain Support
Cocoon Mattresses9.3
The memory foam layer in both mattresses does an impressive job of contouring the body for optimal pressure relief. It distributes the weight of your body evenly around the mattress for back sleepers and reduces pressure immensely.
This memory foam layer also helps to balance the spine for the alleviation of back pains as well as shoulder pains.
Layla Mattresses9.2
Layla Mattress
The comfort layer making up the soft side of this mattress offers variable support in points where you have deep compression.
On the other hand, the comfort layer on the firm side also provides little pressure relief for back sleepers. It was engineered to relieve pressure from the back and other focal points.
Layla Hybrid Mattress
Both comfort layers (soft and firm) provides pressure relief for all kinds of sleepers. The inclusion of individually pocketed coils makes the pressure relief function more effectively for the back sleeper as well as the side sleeper.

Sleeping Type
Cocoon Mattresses9.5
The cocoon mattress comes in two firmness options: the medium soft (5-6) and the extra firm (8-9).
The medium soft option is best for side sleepers. The softness will allow for medium sinkage and the contouring of their curves for full side support. The medium soft option makes the side sleepers have that in-the-bed feeling as the transition layer allows them to sink in deep for pressure relief.
The extra firm is great for the exclusive back and stomach sleepers. It creates the on-the-bed feeling rather than in-the-bed which is seen in the medium soft version. The firmness is great for stomach sleepers as it limits the deep sinkage of their hips which can be downright discomforting. The firmness also keeps the spine aligned for the comfort of back sleepers.
Layla Mattresses9.1
Layla Mattress
With two firmness options available, If you are a side sleeper, you can simply stick with the soft side. This layer offers better pressure relief generally for a side sleeper.
For the back sleeper, you are covered on both sides. They both help in the even distribution of your weight around the mattress so you don’t feel pressure anywhere. Both sides work very well for the back sleeper.
For the regular stomach sleeper, the firm side is ideal. It offers great support for the hips.
Layla Hybrid Mattress
Same double firmness options, the soft side is ideal for every side sleeper. It offers pressure relief and allows the sleeper to get immersed into the mattress. It also eases the pressure off the hips and shoulders.
For back sleepers, both sides are great. The soft side offers better spine alignment and contouring, allowing the sleeper to sink in for premium comfort. Pressure relief is also effective on the firm side.
For the stomach sleeper, the soft side might be too soft, and too much sinking can affect the alignment of the spine. So the firm side is a better option.

Conclusion
Layla is a new entrant brand in the mattress industry compared to Cocoon by Sealy which has been around since the 18th century. Both brands offer two mattresses each.
Layla’s mattresses are flippable, implying that you have two firmness options in one mattress (soft at the top, firm at the bottom). With a single flip, you change the mattress to your desired firmness option.
Layla offers comfort with a polyester cover in the original and a feature-rich cover in the hybrid. Both uses dual comfort layers (top and bottom) to provide a plush cool sleep for buyers.
But Cocoon beats Layla in the competition with a premium quilted cover on the Classic which is a superior cover and then a phase change cover in the Chill mattress which is even more superior in that it regulates the ambient temperature, keeping the sleeper cool and hot when needed.
And then Cocoon seals the comfort with memory foam in comfort layers for that cradling comfort and back support every sleeper desires.
